Director of Sustainable Development Location: Luton Contract Type: Full Time, Interim Are you ready to shape a fairer, greener future for Luton? We're looking for an ambitious and visionary leader to join us as Director of Sustainable Development . This is a high-impact role at the heart of Luton Council s senior management team, leading critical services that will drive us toward our bold Luton 2040 vision a healthy, fair, and sustainable town where no one has to live in poverty. About the Role As Director, you will lead a diverse portfolio of services including: Climate Change and Sustainability Planning Policy & Development Management Transport and Highways (including BSIP) Building Control and Strategic Flood Authority Fleet and Waste Management You ll play a strategic role in major regeneration projects like the Town Centre Masterplan, Luton Airport expansion, and our net zero carbon target by 2040. You ll also act as a key advisor on environmental planning, development, and transport strategy shaping Luton s future through effective policy, leadership, and innovation. Key Responsibilities Provide visible, strategic leadership across the Sustainable Development division Drive performance and value across a £16m revenue and £16m capital portfolio Lead and deliver on the Council s climate change roadmap Champion regeneration, economic growth, and inclusive development Build and manage high-performing, multidisciplinary teams Engage with senior stakeholders across government, business, and community sectors Act as Luton s lead expert on environmental and planning policy About You We re looking for someone with: A proven track record in senior leadership, ideally in planning, sustainability or environmental strategy Experience managing complex services and large-scale transformation A collaborative, people-first leadership style and strong political awareness Professional qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g., planning, transport, environment) Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., RTPI, CIHT, CILT) A deep commitment to inclusive growth, climate action, and public service
