Information Compliance Specialist - £34304 - £40927 - UEA

Job Function/Purpose:

Reporting to the Data Protection Officer (DPO) and working in a small and busy Information Compliance team, the role holder will undertake a range of data protection-related duties, with a specific focus on embedding data protection by design and by default, ensuring compliance and meeting accountability obligations for new and existing projects, research, services and systems. The role holder will also review and improve practices for existing data processing and records management activities.

Tasks will include management of Data Protection Impact Assessments, drafting and reviewing privacy notices, reviewing data sharing agreements, undertaking departmental audits, and providing expert advice to colleagues across the University. The role holder will also assist with the development of information policy and will assist with the implementation of policies, once approved.

Day to day data protection and other compliance work, such as ensuring compliance for new and existing projects, research, services and systems. The role holder will however be expected to provide cover for colleagues and will respond to emerging data protection needs as identified by the DPO.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Information Compliance Specialist's duties will include:

• Developing and monitoring good data protection practice across the University, embedding the UK GDPR principles and 'data protection by design and by default'
• Provision of specialist data protection supportand advice
• Ensuring new projects, services, and systems are developed in line with UK data protection law and comply with University policy and procedures
• Drafting and updating privacy notices and other data protection-related documentation
• Management of Data Protection Impact Assessments
• Review of existing and new data sharing and data processor agreements
• Undertaking data protection audits
• Maintenance of relevant Records of Processing Activities
• Advising the University about new legislation as appropriate, including development and delivery of training
• Advising on collection, use and storage of data
• Maintaining professional skills, including by attending external training and meetings as appropriate
• Acquire and maintain working knowledge of the culture of the organisation including its records management and security practices
• Assisting with the development of new policy as required and ensuring the implementation of policies once approved

Required experience or attributes:

• Demonstrable experience of undertaking data protection or other information compliance work
• Experience of dealing with a range of issues relating to information compliance and a willingness to react confidently and quickly to emerging issues.
• Experience of completing Data Protection Impact Assessments.
• Experience of reviewing and advising on data sharing arrangements
• Good knowledge of UK data protection legislation
• Up to date technical knowledge and a willingness to undertake further training and development as necessary.
• Ability to digest and present complex information in an accurate and concise manner
• Ability to propose and deliver workable solutions and to manage and prioritise a varied workload in a timely and cost-effective manner.
• Ability to work in confidential areas and deal with sensitive information.
• Flexible approach to work, including occasional out of hours work.
