The main responsibilities of the role: Providing leadership and expertise, and setting policy, in the science, technology, and operation of the transfusion sections of the two laboratories Management of staff including recruitment, provision of training, management of employee performance, absence management, and management of rostering Accountability for the clinical safety of the transfusion service, and operation of the quality management system, including compliance with the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005 (as amended) and BS EN ISO 15189:2012 Liaison with the client, Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, and their partners, through participation in formal meetings, especially the Hospital Transfusion Committee, and consistently achieving contractual performance targets. Oversight and management of information assets, especially the transfusion module of the Clinisys WinPath system and its interconnected systems The procurement and management of supplies and equipment for transfusion The health and safety of employees and others Emergency and contingency planning, including arranging exercises. Qualifications and experience required: HCPC Registration as a biomedical scientist, with evidence of Continuing Professional Development. MSc in Biomedical Science or FIBMS or demonstrates equivalent experience. Management qualification to ILM level 3 or relevant experience. High-level working knowledge of biomedical scientific techniques and practices at postgraduate level. Expert interpretive and diagnostic skills. Knowledge of national guidelines and protocols relating to blood sciences disciplines. High degree of accuracy and numeracy. Excellent problem-solving skills. Good knowledge of computer applications and LIMS including MS Office and statistical applications. To provide professional leadership to biomedical scientist team managers, biomedical scientist specialists, trainees and support staff. Knowledge and experience of continuity planning and hospital major incident procedures.
