Do you want to help us create a safe and secure world through the delivery of transformational and trusted autonomous technologies? We seek to develop novel autonomous systems for a better world, working with the latest sensors, deploying our technology to advanced computing platforms and experimenting with novel vehicles. Our team works closely with customers and users, ensuring we are solving real problems in a way that can be deployed in real situations. This means the systems we develop must be safe, reliable and trustworthy. We are looking to grow our team with intelligent, talented and motivated people to continue to deliver transformational technology. We are looking for a Software Engineer with a background in Robotics, or Embedded Systems development to join our Assured Autonomous Systems team. This is an exciting opportunity affording the successful applicant the chance to learn and apply software skills across our entire technology stack, supporting everything from high-level architecture design and technology selection, through to implementation, deployment, and testing. While beneficial, expertise as a production software engineer is not essential. Above all else we are looking for an able problem solver, an enthusiastic learner, and a team player who wishes to develop and apply their skills to a variety of interesting real-world problems. This is more than just a pure software development position, it is an opportunity to contribute as part of a complex multidisciplinary team working on projects that often culminate in tangible, real-world demonstrations out in the field: think bespoke autonomous drones and ground vehicles conducting missions and demonstrations live in front of stakeholders, realised by the software and hardware developed by our team. For example, a typical project might see us use: Using Python and C++ to deploy autonomy algorithms 'at the edge'. Open-source unmanned vehicle tasking and telemetry solutions, using PX4 and ROS2 for example. This project would typically be realised by a small team of 5-10 engineers of varying disciplines and levels of experience, in short timeframes ranging from a few months to a year. We'd love to hear about the particular skills and languages you have experience in or wish to develop further, and in return explain how those skills and languages are used on our current projects - why not ask us more in your interview. Requirements Day to day, the role will include: With the support and guidance of more senior engineers, implementing a range of software solutions across the software development lifecycle, from concept and design through to deployment and maintenance. Working as part of a team to implement backlog work items to realise our product and project aims. Collaborating with other team members to develop and share good practice within the group. Contributing to project teams, creating and tailoring software products to deliver real-world projects. The chance to deliver products and projects in real-world trials, through demonstrations and exercises involving real hardware, end-users, and environments. The opportunity to influence our tech-stack: we have the flexibility to try new technologies and approaches if we believe they will add value. Skills, Qualifications and Experience required: BSc or MSc degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering field. Experience working in embedded software and distributed systems. Good skillset in Python and C++. Experience with ROS/ROS2 development and debugging tools. Good knowledge of Linux. Knowledge of software version control systems such as Git. Understanding of object orientated design patterns. Following areas would help you stand out: Strong grasp of Docker and Kubernetes. Experience with Matlab/Simulink. Proficient developing for embedded systems such as Nvidia Jetsons. Familiarity with networking and communication systems. To succeed in this role, you should offer the following: Excellent problem solving skills. A willingness and an enthusiasm to learn new skills, and the autonomy to do without excessive supervision. Experience of, or a desire to, work as part of a team to deliver complex or multi-disciplinary projects, products, or systems. Enthusiasm to take ownership of technical problems and contribute to our shared learning environment. Due to the nature of the work that Frazer- Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting. For the future of defence Salary:£43,000 - £50,000 DOE + Bonus + Benefits Hybrid working pattern:Where possible, we will seek to accommodate a blended approach to on-site and remote working. The Opportunity: We have a fantastic opportunity to join our Electro-Optical (EO) Seekers & Sensors Department within our Synthetic Scene Generation Team. As a Department, we are responsible for supporting MBDA's complex weapon programmes, working with our Customers and Suppliers towards developing and integrating the next generation EO missile seekers. In order to succeed, we require a high fidelity test & modelling environment; to provide the missile team with all the real-world data they need to undertake the product design, development and acceptance. And this is where you come in... If you are the successful applicant, we will offer you the exciting challenge of developing simulations of complex scenes that must include not just the physical behaviour of the Earth's surface, but also represent in-band atmospherics, platform plumes, and countermeasures effects. This needs to run real-time - on high-end processing devices, FPGAs and GPUs - in order that it can exercise both missile seeker hardware and software algorithms; through innovative techniques, such as digital injection directly into the missile electronics or through the seeker optics using scene projector systems. The team is a small highly skilled, and multi-disciplinary team that support the scene generation activities ranging from software and real-time embedded FPGA development, through to hardware testing and validation via experimentation and field trials. You will have the opportunity to work across all these aspects, and we will work with you to develop your skills, knowledge and experience - as well as supporting your ongoing professional development - all while ensuring a good work-life balance. What we're looking for from you: This is a technically focussed role. If you have experience of, and want to develop further in one or more of the following, then this role could be for you... High fidelity modelling of the world ; experience of commercial scene generation tools such as TAITherm, CAMEOSIM, OKTAL is desirable but not essential 3D Graphics experience such as OpenCL, CUDA, GPGPU Software Engineering, Real-time System Firmware Development is also a skill we use within our team ; experience or understanding of this is always beneficial In addition, we also want you to be well-rounded with good general awareness and interest in our wider missile and seeker system topics. Understanding of Electro-Optical radiation, propagation and detection principles, in particular in the infra-red wave-bands. Experience of imaging electro-optic systems is desirable Strong logical and analytical skills ; experience of undertaking data analysis, and simulations using development environments such as Visual Studio, and familiarity with simulations in Matlab and Simulink is also desirable Have a proven track record of on-time delivery; particularly in a dynamic working environment. Able to engage with a broad range of internal and external partners, and forge strategic technical relationships. Be adaptable, self-starting and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Basic project management knowledge, including planning and risk-management is desirable What to expect: We offer opportunities for career progression, paid overtime (subject to level), bonus scheme, comprehensive pension package, annual salary review, collaborative working environment and excellent on-site facilities. We recognise that everyone is unique, and we encourage you to speak to us should you require any advice, support or adjustments throughout our recruitment process.
