Job Description

Practical Support Technician (Part-Time)

Location: Trafford

Contract: 2.5 days per week (Wednesday, Friday, plus one additional half-day)

Salary: 110 to 150 per day (depending on experience)

We are seeking a motivated and organised Practical Support Technician to join our thriving Science, Technology (Food & Engineering), and Art Departments at a secondary school based in Trafford. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a supportive, welcoming environment with dedicated laboratories, workshops, classrooms, six prep rooms and storerooms.

The successful candidate will work alongside two experienced technicians, providing practical and administrative support to ensure lessons and wider school activities run smoothly.



Key Responsibilities

  • Preparation, assembly, and collection of apparatus, equipment, and materials for practical lessons and demonstrations.

  • Maintenance, cleaning, and (where possible) repair of equipment.

  • Monitoring and replenishment of stock, consumables, stationery, and safety equipment.

  • Maintaining accurate inventories and assisting in the organisation of apparatus storage.

  • Photocopying and administrative support for departments as required.

  • Assisting with set-up for school events such as open evenings, Year 6 transition days, and clubs.

  • Supporting teachers and pupils in practical activities when requested.

  • Covering duties for absent technicians.

  • Ensuring all work complies with school safety policies and promoting safe working practices.



Person Specification

The successful candidate will be able to:

  • Work methodically, tidily, and with excellent organisational skills.

  • Use initiative and manage their workload effectively to meet deadlines.

  • Communicate clearly and work well as part of a team.

  • Demonstrate basic tool use and some ICT skills (Microsoft Office desirable).

  • Be professional, reliable, and sensitive in dealing with staff and students.

  • Adapt to changing situations with a flexible and positive approach.



Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • GCSE grade C (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.

  • Strong organisational and communication skills.

  • Experience working in a science laboratory or similar practical setting.

  • Relevant experience in science, food technology, engineering, art, or related fields in business, industry, or education.

  • Experience of working in a school or college environment (desirable)
